Today, a smartwatch is almost as important as your cell phone. And, like a cell phone, the choices you have are plentiful. Choosing the right smartwatch can be a daunting task; after all, you’ll have to consider style, functionality, and price. While all watches offer some basic functionality–such as a clock, alarm, stopwatch, and basic fitness tracking–different watches offer some unique features.
Not sure where to start? Not a problem. We’ll cover four of the most popular smartwatches on the market today, so that you can compare their features and make an informed decision regarding which watch may be best for you.
Apple Watch – Series 5
The latest generation of Apple Watch, the Series 5, delivers a lot of the functionality that the iPhone has, along with personalized fitness tracking features, a built-in compass, an electrical heart sensor (ECG), and comes in a multitude of colors and finishes. The battery for the watch, though, is somewhat below average, with up to 18 hours of battery life. Of course, one of the better selling points here is that the wearer can connect their iPhone to the Apple Watch via Bluetooth and receive calls, as well as read and respond to text messages.
In terms of pricing, the Apple Watch is one of the more expensive smartwatches on the market. The watch sells for $399 for the GPS version and $499 for the GPS plus cellular enabled version, which does not require an iPhone to connect to. However, it will require a monthly service contract with a cellular provider.
Fortunately, you might not have to shell out this entire amount if you make use of the following deals:
- Sprint – Get 50% off this lineup when you enter an eligible contract
- Walmart – Get up to $100 off the Series 5 GPS model
- Apple – With an eligible trade-in, you can grab one of these watches at a starting price of $249
Samsung Galaxy Watch – Active2
This smartwatch from Samsung is loaded with features that are simple to use for the first-time wearer. In fact, it easily integrates with your Samsung phone for added functionality. Some of the main features of this watch are its GPS navigation and auto workout tracking. Even better, the battery for this watch is significantly better than the Apple Watch, with up to 43 hours of battery life. This watch also has many additional applications that can be downloaded to it for increased usability.
The Active2 is a little cheaper than the Apple Watch, coming in at $350 for the standard version. There is also a cellular version of the watch, available for $430. But, as with the Apple Watch, a monthly service contract is also necessary for this version.

The added features that makes it comparable to other smartwatches on the market. For instance, this watch has built-in Amazon Alexa and can pair to many phones. This setup offers some of the same features available with other watches, such as receiving phone calls and reading text messages. Perhaps best of all, the Versa 2 has up to a 72-hour battery life, depending on the amount of usage (for example, less if you opt for the display to always be turned on).
The Versa 2 is the most reasonably priced smartwatch of the ones mentioned in this article, coming in at a cool $200. There is no cellular version of the watch.

The Instinct comes in many different colors, but all with the rugged style of a sturdy watch. The Garmin Instinct also pairs with most cellular phones and has a number of fitness apps.
The screen display is basic and does not compare to the other phones, but if that does not bother you, this phone is a great value at $300.

Many retailers offer trade-ins for these watches, so if you have an older model watch, it’s worth checking out. Also, it is not necessary to buy a smartwatch directly from the manufacturer (which may save you money), although doing so may make things easier when it comes to troubleshooting or acting on a warranty. Try checking the price online before making your purchase, as prices and sales tend to fluctuate.
All of these smartwatches have attractive accessories, such as covers, replaceable bands, and chargers. Sometimes, you will be able to find a bundle deal on these items, but most accessories are reasonably priced and can be purchased from either the parent company or a secondary retailer such as Best Buy or Amazon.
